1. Clothing and costumesIf you have to wear specific items as part of your job such as a uniform, a suit or any safety equipment, you can claim some or all of them against tax.
2. Laundry and dry cleaningAny cost you incur in the laundering or cleaning of your work clothes and equipment is tax deductible too, including dry cleaning costs, alterations or repairs.
3. MakeupActors and entertainers working in performance industries can claim special purpose stage makeup, but beware that this doesn’t apply to normal makeup purchased at a department store.
4. Beauty productsIf you work in an environment that’s harsh on your skin, you can claim skin products. Flight attendants are able claim rehydrating moisturisers and conditioners.
5. Sun protectionOutdoor workers can claim for items that protect against the sun, such as sunglasses, hats and sunscreen.
6. First aid coursesYou can claim a deduction for the cost of first aid training courses if you are required to undertake such training for work.
7. Newspapers and magazinesJournalists and people who work in media can claim a deduction for newspapers and magazines that they buy for work research purposes.
8. Keeping fitAccording to the ATO, you can claim a deduction for fitness expenses if your job requires you to maintain a very high level of fitness, for example as a dancer or performer.
9. Coloured contact lensesIf you’re an actor and have to change your eye colour for a role, you can claim tinted contact lenses.
10. Fob watchYou’ll have to be a nurse to claim this one, but if you are it can be tax deductible. Regular wristwatches can’t be claimed though.
11. Pay TVIf your job requires you to have to access pay TV, you can claim a deduction for the work-related portion of your bill.

12. Gifts and greeting cardsEstate agents on commission can claim a deduction for the cost of gifts or greeting cards bought for work purposes.
13. Political donationsIf you make a political donation or pay a political party membership, you may be able to claim a deduction.
14. Charitable gifts People who give a certain amount of money to a registered charity can claim a tax deduction on that amount.
15. Microsoft WindowsAs the ATO’s e-tax return only works on a PC, Mac users can claim the cost of Windows or emulation software bought for filing taxes. This may change if the ATO starts supporting Apple this year.
16. Taxis and train ticketsWhile you can’t claim basic commuting costs from home to work, you can claim the cost of travelling during your working day, for example taking a bus, train or taxi to a meeting.
17. Car expensesYou can only claim for driving between your home and your workplace in certain circumstances, such as if you need to carry bulky tools or equipment for work. You can claim for driving between two separate places of work, or for attending meetings or appointments for work.
18. Travel expensesIf you travel for work, you may be able to claim a deduction for airfares, meals, accommodation, travel insurance and incidentals.
19. Home internetIf you use your home internet for work as well, you can claim that percentage against your taxable income. This doesn’t include set-up or connection costs though.
20. Self-educationIf you’ve taken a course relevant to your current work skills, you can usually deduct it. But you can’t claim training for a new career.
